Hello again. To go beyond my posting about the gaskets, can anybody tell me if I can use a 97, 4x4, 4.6L engine and put it in my 99 4x4 that has a crapped out 4.6L. Pulled the intake and realized that there is no way coolant can get into the oil via the manifold, so I have some other issues that are expensive. So I'm definitely into a transplant.

its not a direct swap, the heads are different, intake manifolds, sn few of the gaskets are differemt. i'd just replace the head gaskets on the 4.6.

I think in 99 or 2000 they switched to the PI motor, so it may be a little different.

I new there was some difference, but couldn't remember what. The dealer wants $3000.00 to do the heads. I can buy an engine and have it installed for less. Other garages were close to the $3000 to do the heads. The gasket set alone is $600. I could have a cracked head or block. Not sure if I want to spend the $ to find out. From where I'm sitting, at this point a transplant is going to be the least expensive.

Found out today that the 97 engine will fit the truck, but I have to use the 99 intake. More $'s added to the cost for gaskets, so I'm in the process of trying to find a 99 engine to just plug and play. What a pain. One of life's little curves.

So you have confirmed the '99 has a PI engine? All '99s seem to not have PI 4.6L's, all that said you'd need the heads as well, you can just use the PI intake but you have to RTV some coolant passages up, might as well put the heads on the NPI ('97) engine while you were at it.

I have a 2000 4.6 (non PI) for an econoline van, the motor has never been dropped in a vehicle and has 0 miles on it. I bought it with the intentions of throwing it into my f-150 in place of the v6, but it will probably never happen...so I would rather just get it out of my garage to get the space back.
There are a few differences in the f-150 motor and the econoline motor, but since you already have the f-150 motor you could easily swap the parts over. Let me know if you are interested, Im asking $1500 or best offer.

My dads 99 F150 4x4 has a PI 4.6. most of the time it matters on if its a romeo or windsor engine.

Did a VIN check today through the dealer. Best he could tell was it was a non PI Romeo engine, and I found one! 90,000kms (approx. 55,000 miles).
Mine has over 182,000kms (113,000 mi.) Purchase price and installation for about a grand less than what the dealer wants just to reseal the heads. An independent garage would likely be a bit less for the reseal. Why reseal the high mileage one when there’s a deal on a low one like I found. You’d think Ford would make it a little cheaper to rebuild so they might sell some parts. Makes one think why they’re in trouble. Don’t get me wrong, next truck will likely be a Ford. I just got lucky and got an engine that burped before it should have. Thanks to all for the input and suggestions.

Went to the shop today. E-gads! He's had the truck for a week and the engine is still in it. It's suppose to be ready for tomorrow. Then I notice that the oil filter on the new engine is at the back of the block, screws on vertically to a manifold that goes up to the front and the lower rad hose connection is part of it. My engine, the filter is at the front of the engine and screws on horizontaly directly to the block. Is there a difference between a 2WD and a 4WD block. I got under the truck and it looks like the crossmember that helps support the front diff. will be in the way of removing the filter. He says according to the book, the engine is correct. He also said it was the Romeo engine, which is correct for my truck.
Comments please!
I need info. because I sure he's going to call me tomorrow and tell me that it's not the right engine, and I would like to have some knowledge to make sure I'm not going to take one up the hoop!

I just went out and looked at the motor in my garage, sounds like the same setup.....you have a econoline 4.6 sitting there.
That is another difference in the motors that I didnt realize.
